He has one year remaining on his contract
Liverpool held talks with Georginio Wijnaldum over his future at the club on Wednesday, with Sky Sports describing them as “positive.”
The midfielder has one year left on his contract and has been linked with a move to Barcelona, where he would reunite with former Holland manager Ronald Koeman.
It is understood that the player would prefer to stay at Liverpool, but the club are looking at ways to raise funds to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, who have put a €30 million price tag on the Spanish midfielder.
But following talks on Wednesday, Wijnaldum hopes the club will offer him a contract extension after four years of service after his five years of service at Anfield.
The 29-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016, has won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Anfield and has scored 19 times in 187 games in all competitions.
Liverpool have only made one signing this summer, Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas. They have also let Dejan Lovren go to Zenit St Petersburg, and could let Rhian Brewster go on a permanent deal, with the added insurance of a buy back clause.
