Mo Salah didn’t have his best game
Liverpool extended their winning start to the season yesterday with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. Goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino secured another three points for Jurgen Klopp’s team, who are looking to challenge for the Premier League title.
In truth, Liverpool could have won by a margin of four or five, as some rare poor decision making in the final third let them down. Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes star player Mo Salah was “the main culprit”.
Fowler told The Mirror:
“I’m not going to start condemning the forwards after such a good win. Yes, Salah was probably the worst culprit, and he not only missed a few chances, but also made a couple of dodgy decisions in possession.
“But he’s a goalscorer. He is used to scoring now and he wants to find the net. I know what that’s like, and I can’t criticise him for that. You can’t be moaning at him when the Liverpool forward line took Spurs apart so easily.
“It was a performance from Liverpool that had a bit of everything, with very few weaknesses. I noticed Graeme Souness said afterwards he thought it was my old club’s best team since Kenny Dalglish last won the league.
“I’m not going to argue with Souey, because he’s Souey…but you definitely can’t say that unless they win the league.”
It’s becoming more difficult to see where Liverpool will drop any points this season, with the extra defensive solidity that Virgil van Dijk offers in defence the the reinforcements they made in the summer, with the signings of Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will by no means have such a straight-forward run at the title this season.
