It’s not even 48 hours after Brendan Rodgers’ exit from Liverpool, yet one of his former players has been critical of life under the recently departed manager.

Mamadou Sakho was left out of Liverpool’s opening five games of the season and was linked with a move over the summer.

After a recall for the draw against Bordeaux, Sakho signed a new deal but has spoken of the frustration he experienced when out of the side.

“Let’s say that during the short period when I was not playing, I was like a little caged lion who had not been fed for a while. And when you open the door, he charges,” he is quoted as saying in the Mirror.

The French international also revealed that he has been in contact with Steven Gerrard.

After being given the captain’s armband for the Bordeaux game, Gerrard was quick to congratulate him.

“Steven is an example. Also, he often sends me small text messages like after my first match of the season at Bordeaux, in the Europa League, with the captain armband.

“He texted me to congratulate me, he said: “Continue to fight like that, I’m proud of you.”

“It’s always nice to receive such a message from a great player.”

It appears that Sakho will be playing for Jurgen Klopp when he returns from the international break, with talks with the German said to be progressing well.
