When the draw for the Europa League quarter finals was made, many Manchester United supporters saw Liverpool paired with Borussia Dortmund and expected that to be that.
Those supporters then went back to calculating what their team needed to finish in the Premier League’s top four, hoping to never have to think of that Europa stuff ever again.
Not so.
Liverpool’s stunning 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund, last night, has moved the Merseysiders to the brink of a cup final.
It also tees up a scenario for United fans that would be a nightmare. Were Louis van Gaal’s men to pip Liverpool and Manchester City to the fourth and a final Champions League spot, they would still not be guaranteed to play in that competition next season.
Current Uefa rules mean that were City, who are in the last four, to win the Champions League and Liverpool secure Europa League success, England’s fourth placed team would have to settle for the 2016/17 Europa League.

So, although thousands will argue otherwise, United fans will be taking a keen interest in both competitions and the upcoming semi-final draws.
Crazy things have happened; just ask Everton.
