Liverpool fans rename Margaret Thatcher square in Madrid ahead of Champions League final

Much better, I’m sure you’ll agree

Liverpool fans who have travelled to Madrid for the UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday have taken it upon themselves to change the name of the city’s Margaret Thatcher plaza.

The Spanish capital became the first city in the world in 2014 to name a square after the former British prime minister, a decision which was greeted – unsurprisingly – with controversy.

A year later the mayor of the city, Manuela Carmena, suggested changing the name but it never came to be.

There’s a lot of bureaucracy in politicians attempting to change the name of a square, but there’s a lot less red tape if you’re a Liverpool fan visiting a city and you simply want to get shit done.

That’s why some Reds supporters over in Spain decided to print out some pieces of A4 paper and rename the Margaret Thatcher square as the Jeremy Corbyn square.

They even placed the paper inside some plastic sheets and zip tied them to the post holding the sign, so they clearly want it to stick around for a while.

Thatcher is a hated figure in Liverpool as well as much of the north of England and Wales – and every other working class community that was torn apart by her policies – so their behaviour is definitely understandable and, it must be said, very funny.
