There was an underlying theme to Saturday evening’s sport bonanza.

Liverpool vs. London was a rivalry that showed itself throughout the night’s events.

Wedged in between Liverpool’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Arsenal and the much anticipated grudge match between David Haye and Tony Bellew was another meeting of Merseyside and the capital.

The WBC Silver Super-Lightweight Championship was defended by Hackney’s Ohara Davies in comprehensive fashion as he strolled past Liverpool veteran Derry Matthews on the undercard.

Davies’ superior power and explosive counter-punching speed was apparent early on as he took round one against Mathews, who struggled to land a glove on the man who had talked more than his fair share of trash in the build-up.

‘Two Tanks’ came out more aggressive in the second but remained relatively one-dimensional and rigid, however still earned a clear 10-9 edge over the veteran.

The third saw Davies open up more and Mathews was downed late on under the crunching right hand and thudding uppercut of the undefeated Londoner.

Mathews hit the canvas twice more in the final minute of round three and the third man in the ring had no choice but to call a halt to proceedings, confirming the 12th stoppage win of Davies’ career.

And the 25-year-old certainly left an impact on those watching at home.
