It’s been a thoroughly frustrating transfer window for Louis van Gaal and Manchester United. On the one hand they’ve signed some top quality players, but on the other a truly marquee signing has eluded them.
On deadline day, it seemed as though Marco Reus was the biggest name that came close to arriving at Old Trafford in a blaze of glory. But no, there was another, far more talented player who got away.
It turns out Jonathan Walters was the greatest shoulda woulda coulda of the day. The Stoke City man, who had reportedly handed in a transfer request at the Britannia Stadium, was expected to switch clubs on Tuesday.
The mooted destinations were Norwich City, or perhaps West Brom. However, as the transfer deadline came and went, Walters had a heartbreaking message for Van Gaal…
