Many find it hard to fathom why Wayne Rooney is seemingly undroppable.
The Manchester United striker has started the season in very underwhelming fashion.
If we’re being kind, he’s been very very average. If we’re being unkind, most strikers in the Premier League could have contributed more to the Red Devils’ forward line this campaign.
There is no doubting the player’s overall contribution to United over the years, but his current form – and by ‘current’ we’re referring to months not games – probably isn’t worthy of him being an automatic starter. Many supporters have been grumbling about it for months.
Now the media are openly questioning Louis van Gaal’s unmeritocratic treatment of the striker, and on a regular basis. So much so in fact that the Dutchman is fed up of the incessant questioning of his captain and team selections.
Following the tedium of the Manchester derby, that ended 0-0 with Rooney again contributing little, Van Gaal was again asked about his selection of the England man. It didn’t go down well…
Van Gaal is asked about Rooney's performance/form in press conference: "I don't give any more answer on Rooney because I'm sick of it"

Predictably, the manager’s truculence regarding Rooney didn’t go down well with the United fanbase…
@OliverKayTimes @TimesSport Rooney's position is guaranteed, form or no-form. I'm sick of it too.

He is crazy. The fact that they have to ask about Rooney's form every week makes me sick. https://t.co/v4eGYTLFRs
