Luke Shaw told the world on Twitter he was ‘gutted’ after the challenge that left him with a double leg fracture.
But Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal revealed the true extent of the young England defender’s devastation after the horrific challenge which could see him out for the rest of the season.
Van Gaal told the press that Shaw was in tears in the dressing room after he was stretchered off following the sickening tackle by Hector Moreno during United’s 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
“When he was in the dressing room he had an oxygen mask on,” said the Dutchman. “He was crying. It is awful that a boy who comes at 18 to Manchester and has a very difficult season and then plays fantastically, that it happens like this.”
Shaw, who was hospitalised, was due to be flown back to Manchester for surgery on the double break as he starts his long road to recovery.
But the Telegraph report Van Gaal was left fuming by Moreno’s challenge, saying: “You can judge for yourself, but when I say it’s a penalty and a red card, I am a bad loser.
“Every word is interpreted in the wrong way, but it was a very bad tackle with two legs.”
Shaw has been a shining light for Manchester United this season – starting all seven games and earning plaudits for his performances for both club and country.
We wish him well.
