The striker suffered a concussion in the 38th minute
Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig played out an entertaining 3-3 draw yesterday on the penultimate weekend of Bundesliga action for this season.
The result meant little to either side, with Leipzig already guaranteed Champions League football next season, and Mainz guaranteed at least a 12th place finish.
In a match full of goals however the main incident of note was a concussion suffered by Mainz’ Austrian striker Karim Onisiwo.
The 27-year-old suffered a head injury in the 38th minute, but played on. He then scored a goal for Mainz five minutes later, leaving the scoreline at 2-1 to the visitors Leipzig after 45 minutes.
Both sides went in at half-time but Onisiwo was notable by his absence after the break, and it has emerged that the reason behind this was the fact that he was unable to remember his goal.
Mainz made the correct decision to sub off the forward at half-time, but the incident will surely spark question marks over the protocol surrounding concussions in football.
Last week, during Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 home defeat to Ajax in the Champions League semi-final first leg, centre-back Jan Vertonghen was subbed off after being given the green light to return to the pitch following a clash of heads with his teammate Toby Alderweireld.
Shortly after re-entering the match, Vertonghen was seen retching and had to helped off the pitch due to his inability to walk.
