Manchester City have responded to the tragic death of their former youth player, Jeremy Wisten.

The 17-year-old defender had moved to the UK from Malawi with his family when he was a baby, joining City’s elite development squad in 2016. He had recently left the Premier League club.

News of his death broke on Sunday, with City paying tribute via their social media channels.

‘The Manchester City family are saddened to learn of the passing of former Academy player Jeremy Wisten,’ the club said.

‘We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.’

Along with the message from City, several of the club’s players paid their own tributes on social media. As well as tweets from first-teamers Raheem Sterling and Aymeric Laporte, Cole Palmer, who played alongside Wisten in City’s academy set-up, shared his own message via Instagram.

‘You will be forever missed,’ his message read. ‘Fly high my brother. Rest in paradise.’
