Referee Michael Oliver drew what was meant to be a minute’s applause to an end prematurely after the audible booing, which spoiled an emotional moment for everyone connected to Liverpool.
Liverpool raced into a two goal lead early on through Ibrahima Konaté and Sadio Mané, thanks to a Zack Steffen mistake. The Reds added a third with a beautiful team move finished by Mané again just before half time.
City came out firing in the second half, reducing the deficit to two goals just 70 seconds into the second period through Jack Grealish.
At the time of writing, the score is 3-1 to Liverpool.
