Man United fall behind neighbours City in UEFA rankings

Simon Lloyd

The UEFA rankings don’t make good reading for those connected with Manchester United.

After enduring an awful season under the tenure of David Moyes, the club missed out on European competition last year. As a result, their stock has fallen and they now sit 20th in the coefficient rankings for European clubs, having been consistently inside the top 5 in recent years.

And it gets worse. The news also means that they trail Manchester City, ranked 16th in the list.

United also trail other English clubs such as Chelsea (4th) and Arsenal (7th), and Bayer Leverkeusen, a team that they put nine past in two games while Moyes was at the helm.

Whereas they offer little indication of how United’s current squad will fare this season, the reality is that if they make it through the Champions League qualification round they could very well find themselves as third seeds.

This would make an earlier-than-expected trip to the likes of Munich, Barcelona or Madrid a very real possibility.
