For a number of years, Manchester United fans were desperate for a top-level former player to plug their central midfield gap.

Having got just that over the summer with Paul Pogba’s return, some have decided they want more of the same in a different position.

And a photo of manager José Mourinho at tennis’ ATP Tour Finals has got them very excited indeed.

United struggled defensively in their recent trip to Chelsea, and there’s a fear Mourinho may have burned his bridges with Chris Smalling amid the injury which kept the centre-back out of the trip to Swansea.

With that in mind, the sight of the manager rubbing shoulders with none other than Gerard Piqué had some of the Old Trafford faithful daring to dream.

Piqué was brought to Manchester as a teenager back in 2004 and played 23 times for the Red Devils, scoring twice during the club’s run to the Champions League title in the 2007/08 season.

He returned to his hometown club Barcelona after that campaign, going on to win six Spansh titles and three Champions Leagues.

But could his appearance alongside Mourinho mean he’s on his way back to Old Trafford? Some people are getting very excited indeed.
