Man United fans have a predictably salty reaction to the big Ozil news

Jack O'Toole

What a day for Arsenal.

The club signed Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a club record £55m, plus add-ons, before the BBC reported on Wednesday afternoon that the Gunners had also signed midfielder Mesut Ozil to a new three-and-a-half-year contract.

David Ornstein of the BBC reported that the German international will become the highest-paid player in the club’s history with an estimated wage of about £350,000 a week before tax.

Ozil joined the Gunners from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then club record £42.4m but was linked with a move away from the Emirates this season with his previous contract set to expire at the end of the summer.

The contract renewal follows the acquisitions of Henrik Mhikitaryan and Aubameyang as Arsenal look to make a late push for a spot in the top four, despite currently sitting in sixth, eight points adrift of Liverpool.

However, with the player having been linked to a Manchester United for much of the last year, their fans had a predictably salty response to the news:

Yeh, sure guys, you say that now.
