Man United fans don’t suffer fools gladly. Neither are they easily placated.
If the club thought plonking Wayne Rooney in front of the Sky cameras and getting him to reiterate the unity of the squad and support for the manager to the public would work, they had another thing coming.
The general reaction was one of incredulity and cynicism. Most United supporters seemed to find Rooney’s performance both unconvincing and unimpressive. In fact the kindest reactions were mostly pity.
