Manchester United’s Luke Shaw may be on the mend after suffering an horrific injury against PSV Eindhoven, but his team-mates’ thoughts were still with the defender during the win at Southampton.
United midfielder Juan Mata has publicly dedicated the victory at St Mary’s to Shaw, who played for the Saints before his £30m move to Old Trafford in 2014.
‘We wanted to dedicate a victory to him as soon as possible, to make him feel happy, at least momentarily, and it came this very Sunday,’ Mata wrote in his blog.
Mata scored the third goal in United’s 3-2 win, and also praised David De Gea for his role in the hard-fought victory.
‘David was there to make amazing saves, like many other times in the last few years, and so we won,’ Mata added.
