Everton thrashed Manchester United 4-0 at Goodison
Manchester United slumped to their sixth defeat in eight games as Everton thrashed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side 4-0 at Goodison Park.
United fell behind to Richarlison’s acrobatic 13th-minute opener, with Everton doubling their lead inside half an hour courtesy of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s shot from distance.
United struggled to create any chances of their own throughout the first half, their front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku largely anonymous. Though Solskjaer replaced the injured Phil Jones and the ineffective Fred with Ashley Young and Scott McTominay at half-time, little changed after the break.
Lucas Digne scored Everton’s third ten minutes into the second half, firing home from the edge of the area after United failed to deal properly with a corner.
Theo Walcott, on for the injured Richarlison, then added the final goal of the afternoon after being played through on 64 minutes.
Undoubtedly, Everton were good value for their win and the manner with which it was achieved, Marco Silva’s side’s turning in their best performance at home of the entire season.
For United, who only managed their first shot on target after 86 minutes, it puts a hefty dent in their hopes of securing Champions League qualification.
Solskjaer’s men will need to win all their remaining games – starting with Wednesday’s Manchester derby against title chasing City – to stand any chance of finishing in the top four.
