Man Utd appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager on permanent basis

Ole’s at the wheel

Manchester United have confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as manager on a permanent basis.

Solskjaer returned to Old Trafford in December, taking charge as caretaker boss following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Though he was expected to return to his role as manager of Norwegian club Molde at the end of the current campaign, United’s impressive form under Solskjaer has convinced the club’s owners to reward him with a permanent contract.

Whereas United’s hopes of securing qualification for next season’s Champions League seemed all but over at the end of Mourinho’s time in charge, they have since won ten of 13 league games – losing just once – to put them firmly in contention for a top four finish.

As well as cup wins away at Arsenal and Chelsea, Solskjaer has also guided United to a Champions League quarter final for the first time in five years – beating Paris Saint-Germain in dramatic fashion in the French capital earlier in the month.

The former striker spent most of his playing career at Old Trafford, scoring 126 goals in 366 appearances for United between 1996 and 2007 – most famously the winner in the 1999 Champions League final.

Solskjaer managed United’s reserve team between 2008 and 2011, before the first of his two spells in charge of Molde. He also managed Cardiff City during their first season in the Premier League but was unable to steer them away from relegation, later leaving the club after a poor start to the Championship season.
