Manchester United have reportedly failed in what must now be their 600th attempt at signing Jadon Sancho after reports emerged that his club Borussia Dortmund had rejected a bid said to be worth up to €100 million.
According to reports, the deal would have seen United pay €80m up front for Sancho with a further €20m in add-ons. Despite the insufferable nature of the speculation linking Sancho with United, this is actually believed to be the first official offer that the Premier League club have made for the England international.
Dortmund have repeatedly stated publicly that Sancho is not for sale and that he would remain in Germany for the 2020/21 season. This, combined with United’s wealth and their obvious necessity for a player of his quality, means that Dortmund are likely to hold out for an even higher fee.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished fourth in the Premier League last season, clinching qualification for the Champions League in the process. Any optimism for the season however was quickly deemed misplaced, with the club signing just one player – Donny van de Beek from Ajax – so far in the transfer window.
United lost their first league game of the season 3-1 at home to Crystal Palace, before winning their second game of the season 3-2 at Brighton thanks to a late penalty from Bruno Fernandes.
