Talk about premature celebrations
A Manchester United social media post from August has gone viral after the Red Devils suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves on Monday night.
Ralf Rangnick’s men were dominated by Wolves for large periods at Old Trafford, with the away side registering 15 shots in the first hal.
While United were marginally better in the second period – and almost took the lead when substitute Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar – it was Bruno Lage’s side who scored the decisive goal of the game through João Moutinho in the 82nd minute.
The defeat sees the Red Devils fall four points behind Arsenal in fourth, and 22 points short of city rivals and league-leaders Manchester City.
United’s first half of the season has been underwhelming, with dissatisfying results and performances seeing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his job before, Rangnick arrived in an interim role until the end of the campaign.
At the start of the season, United defeated Leeds with a thrilling 6-1 win at Old Trafford, leading to them tweeting – albeit in a tongue-in-cheek manner – about being top of the league.
Unsurprisingly, considering the club’s current standing, the tweet has since gone viral after the defeat to Wolves on Monday, with rival fans taking great pleasure from the post.

The defeat to Wolves was United’s first under Rangnick and their sixth of the season, with the Red Devils having won just one of their last three games – which came against bottom side Norwich.
It is fair to say that United were expecting to challenge for the title this season after signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho in the summer.
While it appears that the title will most likely be heading to Manchester at the end of the campaign, it looks like it’s City’s to lose after building a 10-point lead over second-placed Chelsea.
After the match, Luke Shaw praised the returning Phil Jones for his personal performance, but slammed the lack of togetherness between the players.
Although United’s premature tweet was undeniably a joke, it is probably worth waiting next time.
