Manchester City’s Rabbi Matondo is the latest young Brit to move to Germany

Manchester City’s loss is once again set to be the Bundesliga’s gain

After the success of Jadon Sancho at Borussia Dortmund, every German side in existence has been casting a covetous eye at youth products from England’s top teams.

Each of them appears to have caught on to the fact that these days young players are very unlikely to get a chance at a lot of English teams, who are far more inclined to simply recruit an expensive player from Europe.

It is this realisation which has seen Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi seek a transfer to Bayern Munich, and Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson decide to try his hand with Hoffenheim.

We can now add another name to that list, as Manchester City youngster Rabbi Matondo is expected to join Schalke 04 during the January transfer window.

The Liverpool-born attacker joined City in 2016 for a fee believed to be around £500,000, but has failed to break into the first team despite being handed his first Wales cap in November 2018.

His move to the Bundesliga side is set to go through after City accepted a bid of £11.29 million for the 18-year-old.

According to a report in The Telegraph, a host of other Bundesliga sides were in the running for Matondo – including Hoffenheim and Red Bull Leipzig – but it was the Gelsenkirchen team who won out.
