As far as summers go, Manchester United fans couldn’t have asked for much more.
For a kick off, Jose Mourinho was confirmed as the club’s new manager just days after the FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace and busily set about strengthening his new squad.
First came the relatively unknown Eric Bailly, soon followed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Finally, Mourinho managed to entice Paul Pogba back to the club from Juventus, four years after the Frenchman had left for Italy.
After three seasons of mediocrity, United fans are rubbing their hands at what this season has in store for their new-look side. All of a sudden United are being tipped to challenge for the league title again, something that has been well beyond them under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
While there’s optimism that United can add to their record tally of 20 league titles, their strengthened side won’t be getting anywhere near the Champions League final next May. A fifth place finish under Van Gaal at the back end of last season means that United will be in the Europa League, instead.
Just in case the excitement surrounding their world record signing had made them forget this, the official Europa League Twitter account reminded them on Thursday afternoon when it tweeted a picture of Pogba with United goalkeeper, David De Gea.
