Manchester United have successfully managed not to complete the signing of yet another Benfica player they had been strongly linked with, reports have confirmed.
Victor Lindelöf, the Swedish international defender, had appeared to be on the cusp of a move from the Portuguese club to Old Trafford, where he would not have linked up with other former Benfica stars such as Nicolás Gaitán, Ezequiel Garay and Renato Sanches.
Having successfully not gone through with a deal for the player, Lindelöf is free to stay put in Lisbon for the next six to 18 months, going on to sign for someone like Zenit St Petersburg or maybe even a team in Spain that isn’t Barcelona or Real Madrid when his time with Benfica eventually comes to an end.
According to the BBC, José Mourinho withdrew his (quite possibly non-existent) interest in the player due to the excellent form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo in the heart of the United defence.
Meanwhile, rumours that United are plotting a summer move for Benfica’s Nelson Semedo have also surfaced this week. By now, the club’s supporters will have probably worked out how this one will end.
