Paul Pogba is set to be named in the PFA team of the year on Thursday, and will likely be the only footballer not playing for title chasers Liverpool or Manchester City to take a place in the side.
According to a report in The Times, Pogba has been named in the team by his fellow professionals after a season which has seen him score 13 goals and assist nine in the Premier League; a massive improvement upon last season.
The choice is likely to shock or even anger some football supporters – and even United fans – many of whom deem Pogba to be something of a fair weather player who does well when the team is playing well but disappears when things are going poorly.
In spite of this perception, his selection to the PFA team of the year suggests that his contemporaries – who know a thing or two about football – actually rate the midfielder who helped France win the World Cup last summer.
It was revealed this week that Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk had held off competition from Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and will be awarded the PFA Players’ Player of the Year on Thursday after a stellar season with Jurgen Klopp’s side.
