Romero was denied a move away to Everton
Manchester United players have reportedly expressed their disappointment at the way the club have treated Sergio Romero over the past few weeks, according to ESPN.
Romero has fallen way down the pecking order at United after Dean Henderson returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United, prompting the Argentine keeper to push for a move away in order to get more first team football. A more than reasonable request.
Despite interest from Everton, United would not budge on their £10 million price tag, and Romero stayed put with very little chance of playing any football this season until January, with Henderson playing cup matches and David De Gea still first choice in the league.
Romero’s relationship with the club and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer specifically started to break down after he was omitted from the squad for United’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea and their Europa League semi-final against Sevilla, despite playing in every round prior to those games.
Now, the 33-year-old has been left out of the Red Devils’ Champions League squad, with 37-year-old homegrown quota box ticker Lee Grant taking his place in the 25 man squad submitted to UEFA.
This appeared to tip a lot of United players over the edge, who feel their teammate of five years has been treated unfairly.
The club’s refusal to let him leave also prompted an emotional response from Romero’s wife, Eliana Guercio, who posted to Instagram to vent her frustration.
“It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club,” she wrote. “He has worked hard every day for this, because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.
“This doesn’t sound right to me. It doesn’t appear honest or professional or serious that they have to let him go. I am very sad because of this.”
