Manchester United set to announce signing of veteran goalkeeper this week

He became a free agent this summer

Not the marquee signing the fans were hoping for

Manchester United are set to sign veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant from Stoke City this week. The goalkeeper only made his Premier League debut in 2016 but impressed hugely against Manchester United with a performance that has evidently stuck in José Mourinho’s mind.

It is not a glamorous signing, but it could be a necessary one, as United’s third choice goalkeeper Joel Perreira is likely to be sent out on loan. Grant will merely play an emergency back-up role at United, unlikely to play in the Premier League.

Grant’s deal with Stoke came to an end this summer, meaning he will join United as a free agent on a deal expected to last just one season.

Grant began his career on the books at Watford but failed to make an appearance for the Hornets. He moved to Derby County as a trainee in 2000 and made his debut for the Rams in 2002.

He has since represented clubs as varied as Burnley, Oldham and Sheffield Wednesday before getting the call to experience life in the Premier League.
