Before Claudio Ranieri led Leicester City to the Premier League, many fans would have said Martin O’Neill was the best Foxes manager they could remember.
The current Republic of Ireland boss led the club back to the Premier League and was in charge when they lifted the League Cup in 2000.
Matt Elliott was the hero that day, with the Scotland defender scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers, and Elliott was pitchside for Leicester’s FA Cup replay with Derby County.
O’Neill, meanwhile, was in the studio, and when the camera was back on him he referred to Elliott as one of his best signings.
Nothing wrong with that, you’d imagine. Until you realise the man to O’Neill’s left for the live broadcast, Robbie Savage, was also signed by the former Celtic boss.
And that wasn’t the only coming together between the pair, with O’Neill enjoying another dig at the former Leicester midfielder – something which didn’t go unnoticed by those watching at home.
Savage: "You used to have a go at me at half time". O'Neill: "Generally with good reason. You never passed the ball… to our players".
