De Ligt’s next move is still unclear
Matthijs de Ligt, Ajax’s in-demand young defender, could now be poised to move to Paris Saint-Germain, reports have claimed.
The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona since his close friend and Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong agreed to move to the Camp Nou earlier in the year.
Despite this, a move has failed to materialise, with reports claiming other clubs – namely Manchester United and PSG – have offered De Ligt better financial terms than those tabled by Barca.
PSG are now thought to be be moving into the driving seat for the Dutch international, helped by the return of Leonardo as their sporting director.
The Brazilian has an excellent relationship with Mino Raiola, De Ligt’s agent, something which reports in Spain suggest will hand the Ligue 1 champions an advantage in trying to sign the player.
De Ligt was unable to help his national side to Uefa Nations League glory on Sunday. Having had an eventful night in the semi-final win over England, he and his Netherlands teammates lost 1-0 to Portugal in Porto.
He was expected to clarify after the tournament where he intended to move to, but as of yet, there have been no developments.
De Ligt caught the eye of several of the continent’s top clubs with his commanding performances at the heart of the Ajax defence during the Champions League last season, where he and his teammates came within seconds of reaching the final.
