Verstappen just couldn’t help himself
Max Verstappen has poked fun at Formula 1 rival Lewis Hamilton’s reported involvement in a Chelsea takeover bid.
Hamilton has been named as part of Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium hoping to purchase the Blues, despite the seven-time world champion previously declaring himself as an Arsenal fan.
Tennis star Serena Williams is set to join Hamilton in joining Broughton’s consortium, with reports suggesting that the pair have pledged to invest £10m each as they have become established investors in recent years.
Williams and Hamilton’s involvement has also been described as a serious investment decision, especially given the sporting pedigree both stars have.
Alongside the duo in the UK-backed consortium is a former sporting icon in the name of Lord Sebastian Coe.
Should the bid be successful, it has been reported that Hamilton would like to have a hands-on approach in helping the club’s efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion.
Verstappen pokes fun at Hamilton
During an interview with the PA news agency, world champion Verstappen said: “I am a PSV fan and I would never buy Ajax.
“And if I was going to buy a football club I would want to be the full owner and to take the decisions myself, not own just a tiny percentage.
“I thought he was an Arsenal fan? And if you are an Arsenal fan going for Chelsea, that it is quite interesting.
“But everyone does what they want with their money so let’s see what comes out of it.”
Difficult start to F1 season
Both Hamilton and Verstappen are gearing up for Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, with the Dutchman – who has suffered two retirements in the opening three races of his title defence – already trailing leader Charles Leclerc by 46 points.
Verstappen claimed his maiden championship in December following an entertaining and controversial season-long battle with Hamilton.
