Memphis Depay leaving Gini Wijnaldum hanging is the saddest thing you’ll see today

Simon Lloyd

(It probably isn’t the saddest thing you’ll see today, but it is really funny)

Is this the most important thing to come out of the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Spain, a friendly match in an international break the world probably doesn’t actually need right now? Nah. Probably not. Definitely not, in fact.

Nevertheless, you’re here now, and it is pretty funny.

Gini Wijnaldum turned 30 on the day of the game in Amsterdam, and was named captain for the night. He came off at half-time, watching the rest of the game from the touchline.

Along with other teammates, he was in position to welcome Memphis Depay back to the bench with little over ten minutes of the game remaining. But while the former Manchester United acknowledged others with a series of fist bumps, the Liverpool midfielder was left hanging for what felt like an eternity.

It was, actually, only a matter of seconds before Depay realised, but watching Wijnaldum’s reaction – captured in the video below – is still very amusing.

As for the part that nobody cares about – the football – the Dutch fell behind to a goal from Sergio Canales inside the opening 20 minutes, but salvaged a draw thanks to an equaliser from Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek shortly after the interval.
