It’s pretty safe to say that most Liverpool supporters don’t want Michael Owen as an ambassador.
In spite of the contribution Owen made to the Reds throughout his eight seasons of service, the Anfield faithful are not happy about the fondness with which their former forward speaks about Manchester United.
Owen infamously joined United in 2009, becoming the first player since Paul Ince to have represented both sides, and he clearly doesn’t regret the move.
The ex-England international scored 17 goals in 52 appearances for the Red Devils and he remains thoroughly grateful of the vote of confidence given to him by Sir Alex Ferguson after the then-United boss failed to sign striker Karim Benzema, who decided to move to Real Madrid instead.
Fergie opted to bring in Owen once it became clear that Benzema wasn’t going to be tempted to move to United and Owen has recently thanked the Frenchman for clearing his path to Old Trafford.
“I thank Benzema because without him I would never have gone to Manchester United,” Owen told Canal+. “Ferguson told me that I will only sign if he couldn’t get Benzema. And that’s what happened.”
The fact that Owen, who is now an international ambassador for Liverpool, continues to speak with such affection of his time as a United player does not sit well with several fans of the Merseyside club and while they’ve wanted him removed from his role for some time – having established a petition a few months ago – the latest comments have only served to fuel the fire.
I'd loved to have known the thought process behind taking Owen as ambassador. I don't know one fan that Fucking likes him. #Judas #mancscum

@LFC why is Micheal Owen still club ambassador? Surely his latest comments prove he isn’t worthy of the role

@LFC why do you persist with Owen the snake as a club ambassador? We have more deserving ex players for crying out loud! #LFC

Dear @LFC, please can you remove Michael Owen from his ambassador post. He's an embarrassment to us.
Sincerely,
