Mick McCarthy does, however, look set to make a return to the world of football management, with… wait for it… APOEL Nicosia.
McCarthy stepped down from his role as Republic of Ireland manager in April when it emerged the European Championships would be postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
After keeping a low profile in the time since, it now appears the former Millwall, Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich Town manager is set to take charge at APOEL in the coming days.
A tweet from the Cypriot club explained that McCarthy is due in Cyprus over the weekend, where he will attend the league game with Apollon and is expected to hold further talks with the club over becoming their manager.
‘The company APOEL Football informs that it expects the Irish coach Michael McCarthy tomorrow in Cyprus, so that the discussions regarding the possibility of cooperation are completed,’ a tweet from APOEL said. ‘Mr. McCarthy will be at the GSP stage to watch the APOEL-Apollon match.’

McCarthy’s departure from the Irish job in Spring was the second time he had left the role, having previously taken them to the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
