Major League Soccer might only have been going for a couple of decades, but those in charge are confident it’s ahead of the Premier League in one key area – competitiveness.
Since the Premier League rebranded for the 1992/93 season, only five teams have lifted the title compared to eight different MLS Cup champions, and MLS Commissioner Don Garber has lauded this element of the US and Canada’s top league.
“We want someone in Kansas City, even though they are smaller than New York City, to think they can win the title,” Garber said at the Soccerex conference.
While last season saw wealthy LA Galaxy take home their fifth crown, the previous year’s final was played out between Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake – two teams with just two high-earning Designated Players between them.
“We see some of the challenges of competing in the Premier League. We have wealthy owners but we are very committed to the idea that at the start of every season every fan can think their team can win a championship,”
With the winners of both competitions potentially poised to go head-to-head in an official competition, we may see whether more competitive equals better sooner rather than later.
