Viewers accuse Mo Farah’s competitor of ‘disrespectful’ gesture ahead of 5000m final

'Disgusting behaviour. I'm glad Mo beat him'

Simon Lloyd

It wasn’t quite the fairytale end to Mo Farah’s track career that many in the London Stadium had hoped for.

A week on from winning World Championship gold in the 10,000m, the 34-year-old was beaten into second place by Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris in the final of the 5,000m.

The bronze medal went to Paul Chelimo of the USA, a man that had angered some watching on television with what they perceived as being a ‘disrespectful’ gesture before the race had started.

Farah finished in a time of 13:33.22, with Edris’s time clocked at 13:32.79. Chelimo took bronze with a time of 13:33.30.

The other Briton in the race, Andrew Butchart, crossed the line in eighth with a time of 13:38.73.
