De Gea will keep his place as number one for another year
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly decided that Dean Henderson should be loaned out for another year, rather than competing with David De Gea for the number one spot at Manchester United.
Henderson has just returned to Manchester United after spending the 2019/20 season on loan at Sheffield United, where he caught the eye with some impressive performances between the sticks for the newly promoted Blades.
The Englishman is understood to be keen to challenge for De Gea’s place in United’s first team, but faces another season out on loan despite numerous costly errors from De Gea this season.
He could even be sent back on loan to Sheffield United again, despite the Yorkshire club just signing Aaron Ramsdale for £18.5m from Bournemouth, according to the Mirror.
Henderson might not fancy that, and understandably so, but there will be no shortage of takers – pretty much every team in the bottom half of the Premier League would be upgraded by his presence in goal.
One reason behind the United’s preference of De Gea – for now at least – is probably his wage. He is reportedly the best paid player in the league, certainly the club, and the last thing they need is a Bale situation. That is to say, a player they want to get rid of, not playing while taking home half a million pounds a week. That would, obviously, make them more difficult to sell.
Henderson is still only 23, very young for a goalkeeper, and if he keeps improving at his current rate, he should get his chance for his boyhood club. As frustrating as it may be, he might just have to wait a little longer.
