Manchester United are back in the winners’ enclosure after their first victory in nine matches.
Louis van Gaal appears to have survived a festive period of discontent and has his United side back in sight of the top four.
Wayne Rooney’s flicked goal was his first in the league since October 17, ending a 77-day drought, while Anthony Martial is far and away the club’s leading scorer with eight goals in 24 outings.
United struggled to find the net at Old Trafford, throughout the season. At just 10 goals, United’s return in home games was the joint lowest for all teams in the top four English divisions this season.
There is one glaring reason why United scored twice at home for only the second time since September 30.
