Paul Pogba’s links away from Old Trafford are becoming as tedious as those linking him with a return to the club as far back as 2016
Back then it was a “will he? won’t he?” sort of transfer saga, as people fretted over whether Pogba would stay at Juventus or move back to the club where he began his professional career.
Thankfully, he joined Manchester United to end the tedium before our heads had imploded from pure exasperation.
Unfortunately, this now means that he is once again being linked with a move away, this time to Barcelona; links exacerbated by Barcelona players seemingly urging the Frenchman to join at every opportunity.
First it was Gerard Pique, who said he would be “happy” for Pogba to come to the club. Now, it is Luiz Suarez, who has apparently said that Pogba would be “welcome” at Camp Nou.
These guys really know how to provide noncommittal soundbites.
Suarez, in his defence, did continue: “Pogba’s an elite player who’s won everything. He has a lot of quality and he’s one of the references at United. I think he would like to be competing for more than he is at the moment. He’s not a player that belongs to Barca, but he would always be welcome.”
That third line – “I think he would like to be competing for more than he is at the moment” – is one which will likely annoy some Manchester United fans but, to be fair, it’s very hard to argue with.
