There has been plenty of disagreement about who should take over as England manager following Roy Hodgson’s resignation.
There seems to be a broad consensus on who shouldn’t take charge, even if no outstanding candidate has emerged thus far.
But Ryan Giggs has at least managed to unite the country, not by putting himself forward but by recommending his former Manchester United superior Louis van Gaal.
Had Giggs made the suggestion two years ago, it would likely have received at least some support. LvG was then coming off the back of overachievement with The Netherlands, reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup with a squad from which few expected a big performance.
But times change, and Van Gaal’s Manchester United tenure – plagued with uninspiring performances and accusations of negative football – mean his international and big club experience count for nought in the eyes of many.

The former Wales international put Van Gaal forward as a candidate during his punditry debut on ITV.
He was in the studio for the channel’s coverage of the Euro 2016 quarter-final between Poland and Portugal.
And at least the managerial speculation has stopped people talking about the former Manchester United winger’s eyebrows, or lack thereof.
