Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard were on punditry duty on Wednesday night.
The former England teammates were guests on BT Sport’s coverage of Manchester United’s Champions League game against Benfica, and the subject of the away side’s performance against Liverpool inevitably came up.
Liverpool and United played out a goalless draw at Anfield on Saturday, and it was a match completely devoid of any notable incidents or attacking intent from the away team.
Liverpool played with the handbrake on and Jose Mourinho set up United to escape with a point, as though they were playing Barcelona from 2011. Against a team leaking goals, with the third worst defensive record in the Premier League, the United manager didn’t risk his team crossing the half-way line.

Gerrard was impressed with Mourinho’s approach, saying that it was “clever management” which helps teams win titles. The former Liverpool captain referenced his own failure to win the Premier League, which drew a slight reaction from Scholes, the former United midfielder who won 11 league titles.
A lot of people on social media reckoned that Scholes was dying to laugh at his colleague’s failure to lift the Premier League, and he did seem to smirk when Gerrard mentioned that he didn’t win the title.
