Benjamin Mendy might have gone too far this time.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly lost his patience with Mendy after the latest example of unprofessionalism from the left-back.
Guardiola had already been having doubts about Mendy but after the France international showed up late to treatment last Sunday, the City boss is now reportedly considering Mendy’s future at the Etihad.
Mendy was at Wembley on Saturday night for Anthony Joshua’s title defence against Alexander Povetkin but was expected to show up at City’s training ground early on Sunday for treatment on his injury, only to arrive three hours late, according to an ESPN report.
Mendy is currently unavailable for selection due to a metatarsal injury and he now faces an uncertain future with the defending Premier League champions.
The French full-back moved to City from Monaco for a fee of £52 million last summer but missed the majority of his debut season in England with a cruciate ligament injury.
At his press conference on Friday, Guardiola was quizzed on the Mendy issue and while he admitted that the defender showed up late last weekend, Guardiola played down reports of a rift with the Frenchman.
“He was injured six, seven months last season. Now he’s injured again. Every day he’s having treatment,” he said.
“He arrived late, that happens sometimes, in the last period a lot have arrived late because of the traffic. Manchester is under construction, the players arrive late. They have to drop their kids at school…..they should be here and he knows it. I spoke with him.
“I expect him back when he’s fit. Now he’s injured, he’s not a problem with physical condition, he’s quick. he’s injured and when he’s ok he’s coming back and when he decides to play he’s going to play.”
