‘How many?! Oh my god!’
Pep Guardiola was lost for words after he discovered Sir Alex Ferguson’s incredible number of Premier League Manager of the Month accolades achieved throughout his career.
The Manchester City boss recently scooped the December award after guiding his relentless side to seven consecutive wins, extending their lead at the top of the table to 13 points after their win against Chelsea on Saturday.
The former Barcelona manager also won the award in November and has won the prize a grand total of 11 times since he first arrived at the Etihad Stadium back in 2016.
As a result, the 50-year-old is now third in the list when it comes to the number of times a manager has won the award – with only legendary bosses Arsène Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson ahead ahead of him.
It seems that Wenger will be inevitably be overtaken by the Catalan coach, with the Frenchman four ahead at present, winning the award 15 times during his lengthy tenure at Arsenal.
But Guardiola was left taken aback by just how many he would have to win to level with Manchester United legend Sir Alex, never mind overtake him.
During his post-match conference on Saturday, Guardiola was asked by one reporter: “You’ve won 11 now, Pep – only Wenger and Ferguson have won more than you. So, is that something for you to be proud of?”
Guardiola then light-heartedly responded: “Be careful, Sir Alex, Arsene… I’m coming…”
However, when the reporter then revealed the number that Sir Alex had won [27], he couldn’t believe what he had heard.
“How many?!” he said. “Oh my god!
“Okay… it belongs to him!
“I will not chase him for sure.”

It seems unlikely anyone is ever going to topple Sir Alex Ferguson’s stellar record of Manager of the Month accolades, but if you would put your money on anyone, it probably would be Pep.
