“I was good player, you know.”
Is Peter Crouch a national treasure? It’s not a title that gets bandied around too often, normally reserved for the likes of David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Olivia Colman and Gerald, the vegetable man on Twitter. But since Peter Crouch’s retirement, he has grown more deserving of the title. He’s certainly the member of England’s golden generation you’d most like to go for a pint with.
His A-grade humour was on show once again on BT Sport on Wednesday night, as he seemingly forgot that he was one of the only Englishman to ever score in both legs of a Champions League quarter-final, much to the amusement of the panel and viewers back home.
After Phil Foden’s wonder strike secured Manchester City’s place in the final four of this season’s Champions League – the first time they’ve reached the semis under Pep Guardiola – presenter Jake Humphrey told the panel that he was the fifth English player to score in both legs of a quarter-final, asking them to name the other four.
Owen Hargreaves and Joleon Lescott got two answers, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard, while Humphrey gave them the third: Raheem Sterling. But none of them could guess the fourth: Peter Crouch.

“What are we working with here?” Lescott joked.
“I was a good player, you know,” Crouch then remarked on his underrated playing career.
Humphrey then chimed in with a rare good piece of banter, saying: “I was going to ask you how would Phil Foden feel, but you clearly have no idea how he would feel.”
Just an example of some of the laughs they have around there.
