Phil Thompson’s combined Liverpool and Manchester United XI shows no sign of bias

It's not a stellar XI though

Robert Redmond

There appears to be no bias from Thommo, but it’s still not exactly a formidable team.

Phil Thompson has selected a combined Liverpool and Manchester United XI ahead of Sunday’s game between the pair at Anfield.

The Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender selected his team based on the best players available to both managers when everyone is fit.

Thompson has selected more United players than Liverpool, and found no place for Daniel Sturridge.David de Gea starts in goal, behind a back-four of Chris Smalling, Martin Skrtel, Daley Blind and Nathaniel Clyne.

Michael Carrick and Jordan Henderson anchor the midfield, with Philippe Coutinho, Wayne Rooney and James Milner behind Anthony Martial up-front in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The exclusion of Sturridge may leave some Liverpool fans scratching their heads, and the midfield pales in comparison to the great players who lined out for both teams in the past.

But at least there’s no bias from Thompson in his selection.
