Police have said it would ‘exhaust all opportunities’ to find the person who vandalised the mural

Greater Manchester Police has released CCTV footage of a man they are keen to speak to in connection with the vandalism and defacing of the Marcus Rashford mural in Manchester.

The Akse P-19-created mural in Withington is dedicated to the Manchester United and England forward in acknowledgement of his ongoing work to eliminate child food poverty and racial inequality.

Following England’s loss to Italy in the final of Euro 2020 on Sunday July 11, the mural was despicably defaced.

The mural was later covered with thousands of message of support for the 23-year-old until Akse P-19 repainted his monochrome illustration.

The force has said that it would “exhaust all opportunities” to find the person who vandalised the mural.

Earlier today (October 12), CCTV footage was released that shows a hooded man acting suspiciously whilst frequently looking up and down Copson Street at around 11:40pm.

He then walked towards the mural and away from the camera.

A GMP spokesperson said: “We have followed all lines of inquiry available following the vandalism of a mural on Copson Street, Withington, in the aftermath of the European Championship final earlier this year in July.

“Since the incident, officers have carried out a vast amount of CCTV checks and now have footage of a man they would like to speak to.”

Greater Manchester Police have admitted that while the footage is “not the best quality”, the reason it has been released is because the force are keen to exhaust all of the opportunities it has to find the person responsible for the “racially aggravated” vandalism.
