Premier League clubs are discussing putting the season on hold for two weeks amid daily increases in COVID-19 across the United Kingdom, according to a Telegraph exclusive.
After an outbreak at Manchester City led to their game against Everton being called off on Monday night, chairmen of top flight clubs have held discussions over a two week ‘cooling off’ period as cases soar across the country.
On Tuesday, Sheffield United confirmed ‘a number’ of positive test results at the club ahead of their match against Burnley, which will go ahead as planned. Meanwhile, Ralph Hasenhuttl will not be present in the dugout tonight as his Southampton side play West Ham at St Mary’s.
Some people see a hiatus in the 2020/21 season as “inevitable”, according to the Telegraph’s report, with many fearing that several FA Cup third round games could be postponed after the next round of testing.
The latest round of testing returned 18 positive cases across top flight clubs, excluding Sheffield United’s announcement today.
Morecambe Wanderers, for example, have already postponed two league matches against Bolton and Bradford but are still expected to play Chelsea in the FA Cup on January 10th as things stand.
