Reports of a second national lockdown broke on Friday
The Premier League is reportedly not expected to shut down in the imminent future, despite reports claiming a second national lockdown could be enforced in a matter of days.
Claims in the media on Friday night suggested the prime minister is giving strong consideration to bringing in strict new month-long measures, with only nurseries, schools and universities exempt. The new restrictions could be announced as soon as Monday.
Following this, The Athletic report that the Premier League – which shut down for three months during the initial coronavirus lockdown in the spring – is unlikely to be impacted for the foreseeable future.
Unlike March, clubs now have sophisticated testing systems in place and the process of playing fixtures in closed stadiums has become routine for all. Because of this, there is a confidence there will be no immediate impact on the league.
While top flight games are expected to continue to be played behind closed doors, the same reports adds that the introduction of new measures ends any hopes of supporters being permitted to attend games until at least 2021.
