Proof that Alexis Sanchez’s calf isn’t quite as screwed as was first thought

Inspirational stuff from the Arsenal man

Simon Lloyd

For a brief time last week, the news reaching these shores from South America was enough to make Arsenal fans hide under their Gunnersaurus duvet-covers and cry themselves to sleep.

Alexis Sanchez, away on international duty with Chile, had picked up an injury.

As is often the case these days, it wasn’t long before the severity of Sanchez’s injury has been slightly exaggerated by the social media masses. What started as calf strain quickly became a calf tear, and before long, some folk were implying the injury was so bad, he’d never walk again.

As it was, Sanchez’s career-threatening calf injury didn’t turn out to be all that bad at all, which is why he was deemed fit enough to play for his country in their World Cup qualifier against Uruguay overnight.

And as if that wasn’t enough to convince you that there’s absolutely nowt wrong with him, he also bagged a couple of goals as he inspired his nation to a 3-1 victory.

His first gave Chile the lead for the first time on the night – the Arsenal man turning his defender smartly on the edge of the box before thumping a low drive beyond the goalkeeper at his near post.

Later, with 15 minutes to go, Sanchez made the game safe. Latching on to a ball over the top, a brilliant first touch allowed him to slot home.
