Thomas Tuchel was not pleased with the result last night
Liverpool emerged victorious from a closely fought battle with Paris Saint-Germain last night, thanks to a late goal from substitute Roberto Firmino.
The hosts were dominant throughout, but almost allowed PSG to come away from the game with a point after they pulled back a two goal deficit through goals from Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappé, before Firmino’s last gasp winner.
PSG’s performance has been widely criticised, as the midfield trio of Marquinhos, Adrien Rabiot and Ángel Di María looked disjointed and Neymar’s influence on the game was minimal.
PSG boss Thomas Tuchel, however, believes his team were hard done by last night, claiming the result was “not logical or correct”, going by the teams’ performances.
In his post-match press conference, Tuchel said:
“Maybe the score didn’t tell the story of the game. Right at the end, we had the chance with Julian Draxler that could have won it before Liverpool scored.
“We put in a great performance in the first half. For me, the result was not logical or correct.
“We conceded two goals in the first half but never at any point did we lose our confidence.
“We played with a lot of bravery and mental strength. Maybe in the second half we gave the ball away too easily but this is Anfield, Jurgen Klopp has worked with his team for three years, Liverpool press you and make it hard. But we never lost our shape.
“Through our efforts we managed to get the equalising goal. But the end was very, very tough.”
Despite spending hundreds of millions in recent years, a large proportion of which went on Neymar, PSG still face the challenge of making the next step in the Champions League. This is not the start they had hoped for to their European campaign.
