Ragnar Klavan, we hardly knew ye.
Klavan has completed his move to Cagliari after two years with Liverpool.
The defender made 53 appearances for the Reds and became the first Estonian player to score a Premier League goal when he found the net in injury time against Burnley at the beginning of the year.
Virgil van Dijk’s arrival in January pushed Klavan even further down Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order and the 32-year-old has decided to move to Cagliari in pursuit of more playing time.
Klavan has revealed that multiple clubs were interested in signing him this summer but after consulting some Liverpool teammates, he felt that the Serie A club was the perfect destination.
Dejan Lovren put Klavan in touch with Cagliari full-back Darijo Srna, while former Roma players Mohamed Salah and Alisson couldn’t speak highly enough of the Italian top flight. Ex-Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, who is currently at Lazio, also let Klavan know that Serie A was the place to be.
“I had offers from several teams, including in other countries, but Cagliari really wanted me,” Klavan told Sky Sport Italia.
“Darijo Srna advised me to come here, as I talked to him via Dejan Lovren. Other Liverpool teammates like Alisson, Salah and Lucas Leiva all spoke highly of Serie A.
“I’m certain we’ll do great things here and I am really fired up. The city is wonderful and so are the fans, I can’t wait to get started.”
Cagliari get their league campaign underway with a trip to Empoli on Sunday evening.
